The following are course electives for the Language Arts program at Thai-Chinese International School. Instructor approval is required for each course.


ACADEMIC ENGLISH

This supplementary class will allow students to focus on improving reading, listening, organizational, and writing skills necessary for success in an English-speaking school environment. As well as providing support for a student’s regular Language Arts course, this course provides extra help for other Upper-School courses.

CREATIVE WRITING

This class is designed to help students gain a control of language necessary for effective self-expression. Studying various literary forms such as narratives, journals, poetry, and short stories, students will respond in various forms, and will actively evaluate their own writing and that of their peers in workshops. Students in this class must have a reasonable command of the English language, and must be willing to give and receive constructive criticism to assist themselves and other members of the class in developing their voices as writers.

FORENSIC DRAMA

This class is designed to provide the student with the basic skill necessary for public performance. In addition to the study of competitive speaking, such as oral interpretation and debate, students will learn the process and product of various forms of dramatic arts. The class-work includes speaking activities, acting activities, and public performances and students must possess a willingness to participate in the activities and performances that take place inside and outside of the class.

TEST AND COLLEGE PREPARATION

This class is designed to prepare students for higher education, by focusing on skills such as self-assessment, planning, study skills, test-taking strategies, and critical thinking. Through active involvement in reading, writing, researching, and discussion, students will develop skills and learning processes necessary for academic success in college.
