The following are required classes for the Language Arts program at Thai-Chinese International School. A student must successfully complete a class before taking the next class.


ENGLISH 9

This class lays the foundation for the study of upper school language and literature. Students will develop speaking, reading, and writing skills and will use these skills to foster critical thinking and effective communication. Studying major genres of literature such as short story, poetry, nonfiction, drama, and novel, students will improve reading comprehension, develop vocabulary skills, identify and analyze elements of literature, improve oral communication and research skills, utilize the writing process, and respond to the literature through both formal and informal writing and other activities.

Prerequisite: 8th grade English

ENGLISH 10

This class will build on the skills developed in English 9 in preparation for higher level Language Arts courses. Through a continuing study of major literary genres, students will continue to develop vocabulary skills, to improve reading comprehension, to utilize the writing process, to control language in both written and spoken form, to think critically, to analyze literary elements, and to write for a variety of purposes.

WORLD LITERATURE

This class uses a sampling of readings from various cultures to examine major themes of the human experience. Using a variety of genres and authors from numerous world regions, students will develop an ability to compare and contrast literature and cultures, to understand and analyze literary terms, to engage meaningfully in discussions, to utilize the writing process, and to improve language skills in written and verbal responses.

Prerequisite: English 10

BRITISH LITERATURE

This class is designed to give students a chance to explore the literature of Britain. Using literature by British writers, students will read and respond to the techniques, styles, and developments of British writing. Through a study of historical, social, political, and scientific viewpoints as represented through British literature, students will draw connections between the literature and the various themes of British society and will refine communication skills by responding to the literature in various forms.
