Softball MatchFrom the desk of Coach Raviv: I’m looking for able-bodied male and female teachers to scrap it out with my softball boys. The guys need practice and have never played a real game and need some experience. I’m assuming Kori, Griffin, Mike and GL Joe will be the front runners, and I know it’s hard to get out after school, but let’s do this for the team, yeah! Let’s get some ladies out too. As inspiration for you, the nurse came out for basketball once in a tough match so no excuses! J The game would be on either a Tuesday or Thursday. Please email me and let me know what day would be better for you so I can try to formulate a date. I’d like to do this next week, so let me know (by email) which day is better and wait for further instructions. Monday, April 19, 2004
School-wide Poetry ContestThe entire school population, including teachers, is encouraged to participate in the contest. The winners from each grade will be published in the last edition of TCIS Bring Out the Real Thing Creative magazine. We will ask any student who wants to participate in the contest to give their English teacher a poem before April 29. Any teacher that wants to make this part of their class is more than welcome to make that decision. Please if you do receive many poems from your students, can you help the Creative Writing class by selecting what you believe to be the best 2 or 3 best poems. Thanks for your help. TCIS Celebrates Songkran FestivalSawaddee kha, hope you're all healthy. It is getting hotter, isn't it. It is summer time and April is the hottest month of the year. That's why Thai people celebrate Songkran, water festival. Songkran is the Thai traditional New Year and occasion for family reunion. 'Songkran' means 'move' or 'change place' as it is the day when the sun changes its position in the zodiac. It is known as the 'Water Festival' as people believe that water will wash away bad luck. This Thai traditional New Year begins with early morning merit-making by offering food to Buddhist monks and releasing small animals as birds or turtles. Paying homage to one's ancestors is an important part of the day. People will pay their respect to the elders by pouring scented water over the palms while the elders are wishing the youngsters good luck and prosperity, called 'Rot Nam Dam Hua'. In the afternoon, after performing a bathing rite for Buddha images and the monks in the temple (In some big cities, they will parade a main Buddha images around town so people can pour water on them.), the celebrants joyfully splash water on each other. The most famous place for Songkran festival is in Chiang Mai, from April 13-15. We will have Songkran Celebration on Fri 9th Apr at our school. Let have some fun together then. -- by Goi
